Why do you think educators are so important right now?

Educators have always been important, but they are increasingly so after COVID closed so many schools. I was in the classroom last year and I saw the devastating impact distance learning had on academics and social/ emotional skills. We need as many excellent educators as possible right now to make sure our kiddos continue on the path to post-secondary success. And that they start to love school again!

What makes this program so special?

This program because it removes many barriers for those who want to become teachers. In Minnesota, it can be very expensive and take a lot of time to complete a traditional teacher preparation program. We have so many amazing folks who want to become teachers, many of whom already work in schools. Especially with the current teacher shortage, but even before that, with the serious lack of teacher diversity in our state, we needed a way to bring more diverse, talented people into the profession. Teach Minnesota will help to accomplish that goal!

What does justice in education mean to you?

Educational justice means that all kids, no matter their race or zip code, have access to an excellent education. And all kids leave High School prepared to chase their dreams- college, career, and beyond.

What keeps you motivated in this work?

Spending time in classrooms and seeing the amazing work our fellows are doing with students!
