Finding a Teaching Position

Teachers are more successful when they work in a school that is a good fit for them. As a teachNOLA Fellow, you will be responsible for leading your own job search to ensure that both you and your principal feel good about the match. While our staff will offer resources and guidance, all hiring decisions are ultimately made by principals or other school-based administrators. We do not place Teaching Fellows in a school. Instead, you should expect to conduct an aggressive job search.

New Orleans offers a unique educational landscape, with Fellows teaching in the Jefferson Parish, Orleans Parish and charter schools. In fact, close to 70 percent of Fellows teach in charter schools because they enroll all New Orleans students.  This program exists to help ensure our state’s most disadvantaged students get great teachers, so you will need to be extremely flexible about your teaching assignment, anticipating that you will work in the school where you are needed most.

Although this may sound daunting, teachNOLA will help you navigate the hiring process, showing you how to find vacancies and reaching out to principals on your behalf.

While admission to teachNOLA does not guarantee a teaching position, the need for quality teachers in critical-shortage subjects remains high.

For the past seven years, 100 percent of teachNOLA Fellows who successfully completed training were hired before the start of school.

Salary and Benefits

Once you find a position, you will be a full-time employee of the district or charter school management organization that hired you and will earn the same starting salary as any other first-year teacher in your school. In 2019-20, first-year teacher salaries will range from $38,000 to $45,000. It is not uncommon for first-year Fellows to be hired as Teacher Associates or Co-Teachers, positions where two teachers work as a team within a single classroom. The salary for these positions may vary slightly from the range provided above.

Fellows can access the same comprehensive benefits as all new teachers working in their school, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. You can view the Jefferson Parish’s salary schedule here and their benefits program here. Due to the autonomous nature of charter schools in New Orleans, salary and benefits are competitive but vary widely from school to school.

As a teachNOLA Fellow, you may be eligible to enroll in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program. AmeriCorps is a national network of service programs that connects more than 100,000 Americans each year to serve our country’s most critical needs in areas including environmental issues, disaster relief and education.

Upon successfully completing your first year of teaching in a high-need school, Fellows enrolled in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program will be eligible for several financial benefits:

  • An education award of up to $5,815. AmeriCorps awards cannot be applied towards TNTP Academy tuition and fees, but they can be used for repayment of federal student loans and/or for future educational costs at schools that accept federal financial aid.
  • Postponing repayment of federal student loans. As an AmeriCorps member, you may be eligible to pause repayment of any outstanding federal student loans. That means you would not have to make any federal student loan payments during your year of service, and after successfully completing the year, AmeriCorps would repay any interest accrued during that time.

In addition to these financial benefits, AmeriCorps members receive special training that prepares them to incorporate service learning and volunteerism into their teaching, including opportunities to participate in special activities such as AmeriCorps Week and the Martin Luther King Day of Service in their local communities.

Participation in AmeriCorps is dependent on federal funding and the award size is subject to change annually. As a result, candidates will be notified as soon as eligibility is determined, most likely at pre-service training.
